Outdoor Learning Environment (O.L.E.)

At Alice Carlson, learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Our Outdoor Learning Environment (OLE) gives students opportunities to learn, explore, and connect with the natural world right on our campus.

The OLE is part of Carlson’s 7.5-acre historic campus and serves as an extension of our classrooms. Students participate in garden learning experiences that complement Carlson’s Applied Learning approach, connecting hands-on experiences with the learning happening throughout their school day.

Through the OLE, students have opportunities to observe, wonder, ask questions, problem-solve, and learn through authentic experiences. Those experiences connect naturally to the core beliefs of Applied Learning at Carlson: inquiry and problem-solving, student voice, collaboration, community, and accountability.

Our garden education program works directly with students in the OLE, while the Tarrant Area Master Gardeners support the care and stewardship of the space.
